Mexico Assembly
National Press Club, Mexico City, Mexico
May 12- 15, 2008
TIGRA held its first Transnational Assembly for Remitters and Families to give expression to the economic and political power of an emerging constituency on the global stage: low-wage migrant workers who are at the epicenter for fighting poverty in the world today by sending modest sums of money to the families they’ve left behind.
The event united industry, government, development, and labor leaders from around the world with remitter communities to discuss a progressive agenda to address the root causes of migration from the perspective of remitters and their families. Over 200 people attended from 31 countries and together launched the Global League of Community Sustainers- La Liga de Sustentadores de la Comunidad Mundial. This network of migrant organizations and leaders worldwide seeks economic security for families and communities of origin, political participation on the world stage to have determination over policies that affect our lives, and to assert a new way of being in a globalized world- transnational families united by the love and power of their remittances. The launching was formalized with a Declaration of Principles ratified by those present.
